Big-moment stories for little ones

Short stories for the days that feel big: a new baby, the first day at daycare, the potty, the doctor. Add your child's name and read it together, or print it as a little book.

These are ten short first-person stories for moments toddlers and preschoolers often find hard. Add your child's name and the grown-ups' names and they are filled in on your device; nothing is sent to us. Read it on screen together, or print it as a folded book.

Which story do you need?

  • A new baby in our familyRead it before the baby comes and again after. Let your child add what they notice.
  • My first day at daycare or preschoolSay goodbye clearly and cheerfully, and keep your promise to come back. Practice with a short visit first.
  • Learning to use the pottyRead it when your child shows interest, with no pressure.
  • A visit to the doctorTell your child the truth about what will happen, in small steps. If a shot is likely, say that it may pinch and that it is quick.
  • Getting a haircutLet your child watch a sibling or parent first, and sit on your lap if they want to.
  • Moving to a new homePack your child's favorite things last and unpack them first, so the new place feels like theirs right away.
  • My big-kid bedLet your child help pick the sheets or a bedtime toy. Keep the bedtime routine the same.
  • Flying on a planePack a few new small books or quiet toys, and let your child look out the window at takeoff.
  • When my grown-up goes on a trip for workShow a calendar with the days crossed off, and plan a call or video chat at the same time each day.
  • Saying goodbye to a petUse plain, true words like "died" and "stopped working", and make room for all feelings. Let your child say goodbye in their own way.

How do I read these with my child?

Read it a few times before the big day, and again after. Stop to let your child say what they notice or feel. A story helps a child know what to expect; it doesn't replace a hug, and you can change any words to fit your family.
