Posting slot: a play idea for 12 to 18 months

You need: a shoebox, big plastic lids from food tubs.

1. A grown-up cuts a slot in the shoebox lid, a little wider than the plastic lids.
2. Show your toddler how to post a lid through the slot.
3. Let them post them all, then open the box to find them.
4. Start again.

Builds: moving and using hands and thinking and problem solving. Turning a lid to fit a slot takes careful hands and a bit of thinking.

Safety: Grown-ups do the cutting; keep scissors and knives out of reach.
