Siblings and a new baby

A big brother or sister often feels many things at once when a baby joins the family. Reading a story together, giving the older child a way to help, and keeping a little one-on-one time are ideas many families use.

What can help?

  • Read A new baby in our family together, before and after.
  • Let your older child help in small ways: choosing a blanket, singing, bringing a diaper.
  • Keep some special time with the older child every day, even ten minutes.
  • Try the play ideas for siblings, always with a grown-up close by.
